ANDERSON CAPTURES 2ND ATP WORLD TOUR TITLE AFTER MOYA DOMINATES ATP CHAMPIONS TOUR DRAW
While Ivan Lendl, Carlos Moya, Michael Chang, Pat Cash, and other ATP Champions Tour legends kicked off the 20th anniversary of the Delray Beach ITC, a star-studded ATP World Tour cast including Andy Roddick, John Isner, the Bryan Brothers, and Bernard Tomic were warming up to provide its own fireworks for the 10-day event - the world's only combined ATP World Tour and ATP Champions Tour event.
ATP CHAMPIONS TOUR EVENT. Carlos Moya defeated eight-time Grand Slam champion Ivan Lendl, his boyhood idol, 6-4, 6-4 to claim his fifth title since joining the ATP Champions Tour last year. "It was a strange feeling to see him across the net. I used to watch him a lot," Moya, 35, said of Lendl, 52. Moya, who finished the 2011 ATP Champions Tour ranked No., dropped only one set during his four matches in the eight-player round robin tournament. His match against Lendl fulfilled one of his wishes he had for the Delray Beach ITC. Moya became the first player to punch his ticket to the finals when he defeated Aaron Krickstein in straight sets Sunday afternoon to finish pool play with a 3-0 record. Moya's 6-4, 6-4 win against Krickstein clinched the No. 1 position in the Group B standings. It was Moya's third match in as many days, but he had Monday off to rest for Tuesday's final against Lendl. Michael Chang, who lost to Moya in straight sets in pool play, defeated Mikael Pernfors 7-6, 3-6, 13-11 in the third-place match of the Champions Tour tournament.
Moya, Lendl, Chang, Krickstein, and Pernfors were joined in the eight-player round robing ATP tournament by Pat Cash, Jimmy Arias, and Johan Kriek.
ATP WORLD TOUR EVENT. Kevin Anderson stamped his name into the Delray Beach ITC's record book when he became the first South African to capture the title in the 20-year history of the ATP tournamen, beating Australian qualifier Marinko Matosevic 6-4, 7-6(2) to claim his second ATP World Tour title. "I could'nt have asked for a better week leading up to Indian Wells and Miami," Anderson said. He enetered the week ranked No. 36 and will now move into the top 30 in the world. The past 12 months have been quite a ride for Anderson. He captured his first title in Johannesburg in February last year, he got married three months ago, and Sunday he notched his second ATP title. "It's fantastic. My first (title) in the United States is great," said Anderson, who played college tennis at the University of Illinois nad now resides in the Chicago area. "I feel, apart from South Africam this is my new home... This is a very important tournament for me. It's my third year (here) and I'm sure I'll be back quite a few times."
On his way to the title, he defeated two-time Delray Beach champion Xavier Malisse, No.4 seed and local fan favorite Andy Roddick, and No. 1 seed John Isner before prevailing over Matosevic in the final.
Matosevic, 26, was making his first appearance in an ATP World Tour final. He entered the week ranked No. 173 and had to win three qualifying matches early in the week to earn a spot in the singles main draw. He won a grueling three-set match that included a lengthy third-set tiebreaker in the semi final against Dudi Sela of Isreal. Matosevic was the fifth qualifier to reach the final in the ITC's history but fell short of becoming the third qualifier to win here.
Colin Fleming and Ross Hutchins became the first all-British team to capture the doubles title at the Delray Beach ITC when they rallied from down a set to force and third-set tiebreaker and claim the first-place price with a 2-6, 7-6(5), 15-13 victory against Michal Mertinak of Slovakia and Andre Sa of Brazil. Fleming and Hutchins lost only one set throughout the week, that coming in the final Sunday, as the No. 3 seed in the 16-team doubles draw. This title is their second as a team - they won their first ATP World Tour title together last October in St. Petersburg.
