BECKER, SPADEA, MAYER WIN FIRST ROBIN MATCHES
WHILE QUERREY LEADS PLAYOFF WINNERS

Delray Beach, FL (January 31, 2007)—Young American hopeful Sam Querrey led the charge of players who advanced to the round robin portion of the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships (ITC) Monday.

Other winners in the playoff portion of the tournament Monday afternoon were 2002 ITC champion Davide Sanguinetti of Italy, former University of Florida star Jesse Levine, up-and-coming American qualifier Scoville Jenkins and Colombia’s Alejandro Falla. Meanwhile, No. 5 seed Florian Mayer of Germany and former University of Illinois star Amer Delic won their round-robin matches.

The 19-year-old Querrey, who is ranked a career best No. 100, beat Konstantinos Economidis of Greece 6-0, 6-2. Querrey, who lives in Thousand Oaks, CA, won his match in only 42 minutes. The 6’6” Californian pounded out 10 aces and was only broken once. He broke Economidis four times and won 54 total points to 24 for Economidis.

Querrey enters the Round robin pool with No. 2 seed Tommy Haas of Germany and Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei.

Sanguinetti, 34, defeated qualifier Dusan Vemic of Serbia 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. The former UCLA standout broke Vemic four times and was only broken once himself. Sanguinetti won 85 points to 71 for Vemic. The match lasted one hour and 46 minutes. Sanguinetti now enters the Round robin group with No. 6 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany and Amer Delic.

The 19-year-old Levine, who resides in nearby Boca Raton, earned his first ATP win over Lukasz Kubot of Poland 6-3, 6-2. The match lasted one hour and four minutes. Levine broke Kubot five times and was broken only once himself. Levine won 61 points to 44 for Kubot.

Levine, a qualifier, said he was able to stay loose for most of his match. “I had no pressure, nothing to lose, and I was going for it. But I got a little nervous toward the end, and when I saw the last ball go out, I got really pumped. I looked over to my family, and they had their fists in the air.”
Levine next plays in the round robin group with No. 4 seed Benjamin Becker of Germany and American Kevin Kim.

Mayer, ranked No. 50, beat Igor Kunitsyn of Russia 6-1, 6-3. The match lasted one hour and five minutes. Mayer broke Kunitsyn five times and was broken only once himself. Mayer won 75 points compared to 56 for Kunitsyn.

The American Delic, 24, defeated No. 6 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 57 minutes. Delic boomed 21 aces and broke the German three times. Delic held his own serve every time, fighting off nine break points.

Jenkins, 20, downed Alex Bogdanovic of Britain 6-3, 7-6(3) in one hour and 26 minutes. Jenkins, who lives in Atlanta, broke Bogdanovic four times and was only broken twice himself. Jenkins won 78 points to 69 points for his opponent. Jenkins, who won the USTA Hardcourt National 18s Championship in 2004, joins the Round robin group with fellow Americans James Blake, who is the top seed, and Robert Kendrick.
