FROM 128 TO 1…DAVIS CUPPER
EARNS PRECIOUS WILDCARD
|
Delray
Beach—Plantation's Olivier Sajous, a 19-year-old Florida
Atlantic University freshman, won the Delray Beach
International Tennis Championships Pre-Qualifying
Tournament by beating Vadim Demchyshyn of Northbrook,
Illinois 6-2, 6-2 Tuesday at the Delray Beach Stadium &
Center.
As champion of the 128-player field, Sajous earned a wild
card into the Delray Beach ITC's qualifying tournament,
scheduled for January 27, 2007. Four qualifiers advance from
that tournament into the Delray Beach ITC main draw, which
will be held January 28 - February 4. World-ranked James
Blake (4) and Tommy Haas (11) have already committed to play
in the event.
"I can't wait to call my father (in Haiti) and tell him I
won the event," said Sajous, a five-time member of the
Haitian Davis Cup team. "I felt a lot of pressure going into
the finals, but I'm extremely excited that I won."
In the semifinals, Sajous beat 2005 winner Adrian Bohane,
preventing the West Palm Beach resident from becoming the
first player to win the pre-qualifying tournament twice.
