Delray
Beach, FL (January 28,
2007)—Former
two-time singles champion Jan-Michael Gambill was eliminated from the
main draw of the Delray Beach ITC as the qualifying tournament ended and the
main draw 16-player playoff began at the Delray Beach Stadium and Tennis Center
Sunday.
Jesse Levine of Boca Raton, FL led four
qualifiers who earned spots in the playoff along with former national junior
champion Scoville Jenkins of Atlanta, Sergiy Stakhovsky of the
Ukraine and Dusan Vemic of Serbia
Gambill, the 2001 and 2003 Delray Beach
champion who was returning to ATP play after a year layoff, went down to
Russia’s Teimuraz Gabashvili 7-6(4), 6-4. "I can't thank Mark Baron
enough for giving me the opportunity to play this event. You never really
deserve anything and I don't expect anything. Unfortunately I didn't win but I
gave it my all and I had fun." In the other playoff match Sunday, Romania’s
Andrei Pavel won 6-3, 1-0 when Ilia Bozoljac of
Serbia retired with a stomach ailment. Both Gabashvili and Pavel advanced to the main draw’s round robin competition, which begins Monday, along
with remaining playoff matches.
Boca Raton’s Vince Spadea, who is
making his 10th
appearance in this tournament, will play Germany’s Simon Greul in round
robin play in Monday’s 7:00 pm feature match, followed by another round robin
match between Germany’s Benjamin Becker and American Kevin Kim.
